The integration of refrigeration and transportation has reaped economical and financial benefits that were previously untapped. The mobile refrigeration system creates a cold temperature by removing heat from the inside of the truck, expelling it outside. In order to remove heat energy, the compartment itself must have a self-contained atmosphere. A self-contained compartment means no heat enters it from the external atmosphere. High-density polymer foams are used for insulation of the compartment, coupled with a seal around the door. This makes the compartment heat-tight. After the compartment is self-contained, the next step is to remove as much heat from the inside as possible. This calls for the actual refrigeration part of the system and it has a relatively simple mechanism of action.

3 components are involved in the refrigeration system, namely: condenser, compressor, and an evaporator. The condenser consists of a long, convoluted metal pipe. A coolant fluid is run through the convoluted pipe in order to absorb heat. Coolants, by definition, are solutions that are very good at absorbing heat. Coolants used in refrigeration are synthesized in a lab to be exceptionally efficient at absorbing heat. Metals are a good conductor of heat and the convoluted metal pipe can, therefore, efficiently conduct the heat from the compartment to the coolant fluid, which absorbs it and turns into a gas.

After the fluid converts into a gaseous state, it is carried to the condenser. The aptly named condenser then condenses the gaseous coolant. The gaseous coolant is compressed, placing it under high pressure. Due to the compression of the gas in high temperature, the sparsely spaced gas molecules of the coolant are brought closer together, resulting in condensation.

Once the coolant is compressed into a pressure similar to that of an average aerosol spray, the condensed coolant is then introduced into the evaporator. The mechanism of the evaporator allows air from the external atmosphere to be run through the high-pressured condensed coolant, cooling it back into a gaseous state and expelling the heat outside. The gas is then reintroduced into the condenser for the cycle to run again. As this mechanism occurs over and over again, it expels more heat energy from the inside of the van to the outside with every cycle, making the interior van compartment temperature lower and lower.
